How the roll count is calculated
This calculator uses a strip, or drop, method. Wallpaper is hung in full-height vertical strips, so the first question is how many strips fit across the combined wall width. Doors and ordinary windows are usually left in the wall width because the surrounding strips still need to be cut at full height and matched.
All dimensions are converted to inches before the math is done. Let W be combined wall width, B be roll width, H be wall height, A be total trim allowance, R be vertical pattern repeat, L be roll length, and p be contingency percent.

Why pattern repeat matters
A repeating design can force each strip to be longer than the measured wall height plus trim. For example, a 100 inch raw drop with a 21 inch repeat must be cut as 105 inches so the next strip can start at the same point in the pattern. That extra five inches repeats on every planned drop, and it can reduce a 33 foot roll from four drops to three.
The roll width also matters because strips are whole pieces. If a room needs 23.1 strips, it needs 24 drops. Exact width divisions do not add an extra strip, but any remainder does.
What the calculator leaves out
The estimate is intentionally conservative. It does not optimize short offcuts over doors, below windows, around alcoves, or on partial-height sections. It also does not model half-drop, quarter-drop, reverse-hang, mural, horizontal, or manufacturer-specific matching plans. Calculate sections separately when wall heights differ, ceilings slope, stairwells are involved, or full-height openings remove entire strips.
Worked example
Suppose the combined wall width is 40 feet, the wall height is 8 feet, the roll is 20.5 inches wide by 33 feet long, the vertical repeat is 21 inches, trim allowance is 4 inches, and contingency is 10%.
The wall width is 480 inches, so ceil(480 / 20.5) = 24 wall drops. The raw drop is 96 + 4 = 100 inches, which rounds up to 105 inches for a 21 inch repeat. A 396 inch roll yields floor(396 / 105) = 3 full drops. Contingency raises 24 drops to ceil(24 × 1.10) = 27 planned drops, so the job needs ceil(27 / 3) = 9 physical rolls.
Common questions
How does pattern repeat change the number of wallpaper rolls?
Pattern repeat can make each drop longer than the wall height plus trim. The cut length is rounded up to the next full repeat so adjacent strips can align, and that longer cut can reduce the number of full drops available from each roll.
Should doors and windows be subtracted from wallpaper measurements?
Ordinary doors and windows are usually not subtracted for this strip estimate. Full-height strips still have to be planned and matched around those openings, although small offcuts may be useful during installation.
What is the difference between a wallpaper roll and a double roll?
Single-roll and double-roll labels are not always purchase quantities. Use the physical length and width printed for the package you are buying, because the calculator works from actual material length rather than naming conventions.
How much trimming allowance should be added to each drop?
The trim allowance should cover the extra material left at the top and bottom before final trimming. Four inches total is a common planning value, but uneven ceilings, out-of-level floors, or difficult matching can justify more.
Does half-drop wallpaper require more material than straight-match wallpaper?
Often, yes, because the start point alternates and the usable sequence of cuts can be more restrictive. This calculator treats the repeat as a straight vertical repeat, so check the manufacturer plan for half-drop, quarter-drop, mural, or offset matches.
Why does the calculator use drops instead of square footage?
Wallpaper is bought in rolls but installed as vertical drops. Square footage can hide repeat loss, trim, and the fact that a partial-width remainder still needs another full strip.
