The standard preset follows the common IRC and GA-216 schedule for single-layer residential panels on conventional framing.
Partial panels, openings, backing, adhesive-assisted work, rated assemblies, and manufacturer instructions can change the fastening schedule.
How to use this calculator
- Choose wall or ceiling work and the framing spacing you are fastening to.
- Enter the drywall panel width, length, and how the long edge runs relative to the framing.
- Use the standard IRC/GA-216 preset unless your plans or product listing gives a different maximum spacing.
- Enter the panel count, extra-screw allowance, and package size to estimate how many boxes or tubs to buy.
How the screw count is calculated
This calculator turns a fastening schedule into a panel-by-panel count. It first chooses a maximum screw spacing, then works out how many framing rows cross each panel and how many screws are needed along each row.
For the standard preset, the maximum spacing is 16 inches for wall panels on 16-inch framing. It is 12 inches for wall panels on 24-inch framing and for ceiling panels. If you choose custom spacing, the calculator uses the maximum you enter instead.
The formula is:
R = ceil(C / F) + 1
K = ceil(D / S) + 1
N = R x K
T = ceil(N x P x (1 + E / 100))
B = ceil(T / Q)
- C is the panel dimension crossing framing.
- D is the panel dimension running along the framing.
- F is the framing spacing in inches on center.
- S is the maximum screw spacing along each support row.
- R is support rows per panel, and K is screws per row.
- N is screws per panel, P is panel count, E is the extra-screw percent, and Q is screws per package.
What changes the result most
Orientation and framing spacing change how many support rows a sheet crosses. A 4-by-8 sheet hung with the long edge parallel to 16-inch framing crosses 48 inches, so it uses four support rows. The same sheet hung perpendicular crosses 96 inches, so it uses seven support rows, but each row is shorter. The total can match for a full sheet, but cut panels often behave differently.
The selected maximum spacing changes the number of screws along each row. Reducing the spacing from 16 inches to 12 inches on an 8-foot run changes that row from seven screws to nine screws because the calculator counts screws at both ends.
What this calculator leaves out
The estimate assumes identical rectangular panels with supported fastening edges. Small offcuts, openings, corners, backing, adhesive-assisted work, multilayer systems, fire-rated assemblies, shear-rated walls, and manufacturer-listed products can require a different pattern. The calculator also does not choose screw type, corrosion protection, gauge, length, or required penetration.
Worked example
For ten 4-by-8 wall panels on 16-inch framing, with the long edge parallel to the framing and a 10% extra-screw allowance, the standard schedule uses 16-inch maximum spacing. The 48-inch width crosses three framing intervals, so the panel has four support rows. The 96-inch length divided into 16-inch intervals needs seven screws per row.
That is 4 x 7 = 28 screws per panel. Ten panels need 280 screws before extra, and 280 x 1.10 rounds up to 309 screws. With 1,000 screws per package, the calculator returns one package to buy.
Common questions
How many screws are needed for a 4-by-8 sheet of drywall?
With a common wall schedule on 16-inch framing, a full 4-by-8 panel uses 28 screws when it has four support rows and seven screws per row. A tighter 12-inch schedule on the same orientation uses 36 screws per panel.
How far apart should drywall screws be on walls?
For the standard preset here, walls use 16 inches on center when framing is 16 inches on center. Walls on 24-inch framing use 12 inches in this calculator because the wider support spacing needs a tighter fastening pattern.
How far apart should drywall screws be on ceilings?
The standard ceiling preset uses 12 inches as the maximum spacing along each framing member. Ceiling work is more sensitive to sag and withdrawal, so product listings and local code details matter.
Does 24-inch framing change drywall screw spacing?
Yes, for the standard preset in this calculator. Wall panels on 24-inch framing and ceiling panels use a 12-inch maximum screw spacing instead of the 16-inch wall pattern used with 16-inch framing.
Should drywall be hung parallel or perpendicular to framing?
Either layout can be used only when it is allowed by the panel, framing, and assembly requirements. The orientation changes which panel dimension crosses framing and which dimension receives screws along each support row.
Do panel edges need additional framing or blocking?
Panel edges need support where the assembly requires fastening. If a cut edge or layout does not land on framing, blocking, trimming, or a layout change may be needed before the screw count is reliable.
