How the score is calculated
This calculator follows the arithmetic used on a whitetail score sheet. It does not decide whether a point is normal or abnormal; that classification has to come from the rack and the current measuring rules. Once those measurements are entered, the calculator applies the spread cap, totals the typical frame, subtracts paired differences, and treats abnormal points according to the selected scoring class.
The spread credit is capped at the longer main beam:
C = min(inside spread, max(left beam, right beam))
The gross typical frame is the spread credit plus both main beams, all normal G measurements from G-1 through G-7, and all eight circumference measurements from H-1 through H-4. The symmetry deduction is the sum of the absolute left-right differences for the main beams, matching G measurements, and matching H measurements. A missing matching normal point is entered as zero, so its full opposite length becomes a deduction.
gross typical frame = C + beams + normal points + circumferences
deductions = |left beam - right beam| + paired G differences + paired H differences
For a typical score, abnormal-point length is deducted after symmetry deductions. For a non-typical score, the same abnormal-point length is added after symmetry deductions. The calculator keeps the net typical score from going below zero and rounds displayed scores to the nearest one-eighth inch.
What moves the score most
Main beam length, G-2 and G-3 tine length, and mass measurements usually move the gross frame the most because they add to both sides of the rack. Wide inside spread helps only up to the longer main beam, so an unusually wide rack may receive less spread credit than the tape measure suggests. Asymmetry matters too: if one G-4 is six inches and the opposite G-4 is missing, the gross frame gains six inches but the deduction also gains six inches.
What this leaves out
This is an unofficial arithmetic estimate. It does not place the tape, determine the end of a main beam, classify abnormal points, apply record-book eligibility rules, or replace measurement by an authorized scorer. Official entry scores may depend on drying time, approved equipment, photographs or other supporting material, and review under the rules in force when the deer is entered.
Worked example
Suppose the inside spread is 28 inches, the left and right main beams are 24 and 21 inches, and the normal points are left G-1 through G-5 of 5, 10, 9, 6, and 2 inches with right G-1 through G-3 of 4, 11, and 7 inches. The H measurements are 4.5, 4, 3.75, and 3.5 inches on the left and 4.25, 4, 3.5, and 3.25 inches on the right. Total abnormal-point length is 6.25 inches.
The spread credit is capped at 24 inches, the gross typical frame is 153.75, and the symmetry deductions are 15.75. The net typical score is 131.75 after subtracting abnormal points. The non-typical score is 144.25 after adding abnormal points instead.
Common questions
How is a whitetail deer antler score calculated?
A typical-frame score starts with inside-spread credit, both main beams, normal point lengths, and four circumference measurements per side. Paired left-right differences are deducted. Abnormal-point length is then deducted for a typical score or added for a non-typical score.
What is the difference between gross and net score?
Gross score is the total frame before deductions. Net score accounts for symmetry deductions and, depending on class, abnormal-point treatment. This calculator shows the gross typical frame and both net typical and non-typical results.
How is inside-spread credit capped?
Inside-spread credit cannot exceed the length of the longer main beam. If the inside spread is 28 inches and the longer main beam is 24 inches, only 24 inches of spread credit is used.
What counts as a normal or abnormal point?
Normal points are part of the typical pattern for the antler and are entered in the matching G fields. Abnormal points are measured separately and entered as one total. The calculator cannot infer that classification from length alone.
Where are the four circumference measurements taken?
The score sheet uses four H measurements on each antler. Their exact placement depends on the antler and point layout, so use the current score-chart instructions rather than guessing from this calculator alone.
Can this estimate qualify a deer for Boone and Crockett records?
