Cruise Drink Package Break-Even Calculator

Estimate whether a cruise drink package costs less than buying the drinks you expect to have. The calculation separates ship days from port days and includes the charges and restrictions that can change the answer.

Your numbers
Enter the days for which the cruise line charges the package, usually the number of nights.
Enter days when you expect to spend a substantial part of the day ashore.
Include every cabin guest whom the cruise line requires to purchase a package.
Use the cruise-planner price before any separately added service charge.
Enter zero if the quoted package price already includes gratuity or service charges.
Enter the automatic gratuity or service charge on individual beverage purchases.
Use a weighted average of the beer, wine, cocktails, and spirits you would order.
Average the eligible coffees, sodas, mocktails, juices, and bottled waters you expect to buy.
Enter the combined expected consumption of all required package buyers.
Enter combined onboard consumption after allowing for time spent ashore.
Include only drinks that the selected package would cover.
Enter combined eligible drinks expected onboard on each port day.
Enter zero if the package has no per-drink price ceiling.
Choose how the cruise line bills drinks priced above the package limit.
Enter zero for no stated cap; drinks above a cap are treated as pay-as-you-go purchases.

What this calculator leaves out

  • Cruise-line prices, inclusions, purchase rules, gratuities, and drink limits change; verify the terms shown in your booking portal.
  • The estimate assumes the entered average prices and consumption pattern apply across each day type and does not model taxes, VAT, excluded venues, room service, mini-bars, souvenir drinks, or temporary promotions.
  • This is a cost-planning tool and does not recommend or define a safe level of alcohol consumption.

How to use this calculator

  1. Enter every day the cruise line charges for the package, then identify the days you expect to spend substantially ashore.
  2. Enter the number of guests who must buy the package and the quoted daily price before any separately added service charge.
  3. Use your likely onboard average prices and combined cabin drink counts for a ship day and a port day.
  4. Add the package ceiling, its overage rule, and any daily alcoholic-drink cap from your booking terms.
  5. Review the two totals, recommendation, and maximum daily price before deciding.

How the cruise drink package break-even calculation works

The calculator compares the package cost for every required buyer with the cost of buying the expected drinks one at a time. It keeps ship days and port days separate because an itinerary with several long port calls can produce much less onboard consumption than a sea-day-heavy sailing.

First, alcoholic and nonalcoholic quantities are calculated as ship days × ship-day drinks + port days × port-day drinks. Pay-as-you-go cost is then (alcoholic drinks × average alcoholic price + nonalcoholic drinks × average nonalcoholic price) × (1 + menu service charge).

The package base is required buyers × charged days × quoted daily price × (1 + package service charge). The tool adds package extras for alcoholic drinks above a stated daily cap and for drinks that exceed a package menu-price ceiling. A difference-only rule adds only the amount above the ceiling; a full-price rule treats that drink as an ordinary menu purchase. The service charge entered for individual drinks is applied to those extras.

Finally, savings are pay-as-you-go total − package total. A positive result means the package is estimated to save money. The maximum worthwhile daily price reverses the calculation: it is the pre-service-charge, per-person daily price at which both choices would cost the same after unavoidable extras.

What usually changes the answer

The daily package price, number of required buyers, and number of charged days set the fixed commitment. Your average menu price and the difference between sea-day and port-day consumption determine how much value you would use. Gratuities matter on both sides: a package price advertised before service charge can be materially higher at checkout, while buying drinks separately also commonly adds a service charge.

Do not assume an advertised package covers every drink. Cruise lines can set a maximum menu price, bill a difference or the full item above it, exclude venues, and require other adults in a stateroom to buy the same alcoholic package. Check the exact package shown for your sailing.

What this tool leaves out

This is a planning estimate, not a cruise-line quote. It does not model taxes, VAT, port-specific restrictions, excluded venues, souvenir glasses, room service, mini-bars, promotions, or a changing menu. It pools cabin consumption only to estimate package value; it does not permit sharing or replace each guest's real daily limit.

Worked example

Suppose two required buyers sail for seven charged days, including three port days. The quoted package is $75 per person per day plus 18% service charge. They expect eight alcoholic and eight nonalcoholic drinks on each of four ship days, then four of each on every port day. That is 44 alcoholic and 44 nonalcoholic drinks.

At average menu prices of $13 and $5 plus an 18% service charge, buying individually costs (44 × $13 + 44 × $5) × 1.18 = $934.56. The package costs 2 × 7 × $75 × 1.18 = $1,239.00. With a $14 ceiling, a difference-only overage rule, and no drinks above the combined 30-drink daily cap, the package has no estimated extras. It costs $304.44 more, so paying as you go is the lower-cost choice. The break-even quoted package price is about $56.57 per person per day before package service charge.

Common questions

How many drinks make a cruise drink package worth it?

There is no single drink count because package price, gratuity, cabin-wide purchase rules, menu prices, and included nonalcoholic drinks all matter. Enter your own expected mix rather than dividing the package price by the price of one cocktail. The maximum worthwhile daily price is often the clearest way to compare an offer with your plan.

Should sea days and port days be calculated differently?

Usually, yes. A full sea day offers more opportunities to use an onboard package, while a port day may include many hours ashore where it has no value. Enter combined onboard consumption for each kind of day so the trip total reflects the itinerary.

Do cruise drink package prices include gratuity?

It depends on the line, promotion, country of purchase, and package. Some cruise lines add a service charge at checkout, while others may display an inclusive price. Use zero for the package service charge only when your shown price already includes it.

Does everyone in the cabin have to buy the package?

Many cruise lines require eligible adults in the same stateroom or booking to purchase the same alcoholic package, with limited exceptions. Enter all people required under your booking terms, not only the person who expects to drink the most. Verify any age and nonalcoholic-package exceptions with the cruise line.

What happens when a drink costs more than the package limit?

Cruise lines can charge either the amount above the ceiling or the full menu price, depending on the package. Choose the matching overage rule and use the average price of the drinks you expect to order. If your planned drinks are all within the limit, choose the option that ignores ceiling overages.

Should coffees, bottled water, soda, and mocktails count toward break-even?

Count them when the package you are considering covers them and you would otherwise buy them separately. Their individual prices may be lower than alcohol, but recurring coffee, water, or mocktail purchases can change the result. Exclude any category that the package or venue does not include.
