How the horsepower capacity is calculated
The federal computation method starts with a length-width factor:
F = boat length in feet * maximum transom width in feet
For factors below 52.5, the calculator rounds the factor to the nearest integer and uses Table 183.53. A rounded factor from 0 to 35 gives 3 hp, 36 to 39 gives 5 hp, 40 to 42 gives 7.5 hp, 43 to 45 gives 10 hp, and 46 to 52 gives 15 hp. If the boat is flat-bottom hard-chine in this table range, the capacity is reduced by one listed increment, such as 15 hp down to 10 hp.
For factors over 52.5, the table changes to formulas. With remote steering and a transom height of at least 20 inches, the formula is:
P = 2F - 90
Otherwise, a flat-bottom hard-chine boat uses P = 0.5F - 15, and any other hull uses P = 0.8F - 25. The computed capacity is then raised to the next multiple of 5 hp:
H = 5 * ceil(P / 5)
The margin shown by the calculator is H - proposed horsepower. A zero margin is treated as within the computed capacity, because the proposed motor equals the computed limit rather than exceeding it.
What changes the result most
Length and transom width drive the factor, so small measurement changes can matter near table boundaries. The result can also change sharply above 52.5 because remote steering with a 20-inch or taller transom uses the higher 2F - 90 formula. Without that branch, the hull-bottom selection controls whether the lower flat-bottom hard-chine formula or the other-hull formula applies.
What this calculator leaves out
This tool implements the computation method in 33 CFR 183.53(a). It does not perform the qualifying performance-test method in 33 CFR 183.53(b), and it does not decide whether a particular boat is covered by the rule. The federal method applies to covered monohull outboard boats under 20 feet, excluding sailboats, canoes, kayaks, and inflatable boats. It also does not evaluate transom condition, structure, flotation, handling, motor weight, insurance limits, state rules, or any manufacturer-specific capacity plate.
Worked example
For the default 16 ft boat with a 6 ft transom, the length-width factor is 96. Because the boat has remote steering and a 20 in transom, the over-52.5 formula is P = 2 * 96 - 90, or 102 hp. Rounding up to the next 5 hp gives a computed maximum capacity of 105 hp.
With a proposed 90 hp outboard, the margin is 15 hp, so the proposed motor is within the computed capacity. The result should still be checked against the boat manufacturer's capacity plate and documentation.
Common questions
How do boat length and transom width determine maximum horsepower?
The computation starts by multiplying boat length by maximum transom width to get the length-width factor. For smaller factors, that factor is rounded to the nearest integer and looked up in Table 183.53. For factors over 52.5, the factor goes into one of the algebraic formulas.
Does a flat-bottom boat receive a lower horsepower rating?
A flat-bottom hard-chine boat can receive a lower computed rating. In the table range, 33 CFR 183.53 reduces the result by one listed capacity increment. Above 52.5, that hull type uses the lower P = 0.5F - 15 formula unless the remote steering and 20-inch transom branch applies.
Why do remote steering and a 20-inch transom change the result?
For factors over 52.5, the regulation gives a different formula when the boat has remote steering and at least a 20-inch transom height. That branch uses P = 2F - 90, which usually produces a higher computed capacity than the formulas used without that setup.
How is the length-width factor rounded?
In the table range below 52.5, the factor is rounded to the nearest integer before selecting the table value. The calculator displays both the unrounded factor and the rounded table factor so boundary cases are visible. For factors over 52.5, the rounded table factor is not used.
Can a boat manufacturer use a performance test instead of this formula?
Yes, 33 CFR 183.53 includes a performance-test method for certain qualifying boats. This calculator only implements the computation method in paragraph (a). A manufacturer rating based on the performance-test path may not match this computed estimate.
How do I calculate capacity for twin outboards?
Use the same computed maximum capacity, then compare it with the combined rated horsepower of both outboards. For example, two 50 hp outboards count as 100 hp when checking the proposed motor horsepower.
