What this calculator leaves out

  • The NRF calendar is a voluntary retail-industry guide; an employer or accounting system may use different boundaries, period names, or leap-week rules.
  • The 4-4-5 and 5-4-4 options apply the NRF-style year boundary but are not presented as official NRF calendars.
  • The historical sales-release date is a calendar reference, not a filing deadline or professional accounting advice.

By using this calculator you agree to the Terms of Use. Results are estimates, not professional advice.

Fiscal years end on the Saturday nearest January 31, matching the NRF boundary rule.

Week 53, when present, is appended to period 12.

How to use this calculator

  1. Enter the calendar year, month, and day you want to convert.
  2. Leave the period pattern at 4-5-4 for the NRF layout, or choose 4-4-5 or 5-4-4 for the same year boundary with different period placement.
  3. Choose whether a 53-week prior year should be restated for comparison.
  4. Read the fiscal period, retail week, comparable date, and full period table.

How the retail calendar date is calculated

The NRF 4-5-4 calendar is a week-based retail calendar. A retail week runs Sunday through Saturday, and the fiscal year ends on the Saturday nearest January 31. The next fiscal year starts the following Sunday. This keeps comparable retail periods aligned by weekday and holiday timing more closely than ordinary calendar months do.

For a fiscal year y, let E_y be the Saturday nearest January 31 of calendar year y + 1. Let S_y = E_(y - 1) + 1 day. The calculator finds the fiscal year whose S_y through E_y range contains the entered date.

After the fiscal year is known, the retail week is:

week = floor((date - fiscal year start) / 7 days) + 1

The day of week is the remaining offset, where Sunday is day 1 and Saturday is day 7. The selected period pattern is then expanded to 12 periods: 4,5,4 repeated four times for the NRF option, 4,4,5 repeated four times, or 5,4,4 repeated four times. If the fiscal year has 53 weeks, the extra week is added to period 12.

How 53-week years and comparisons work

A 52-week retail calendar has 364 days, so the fiscal year boundary drifts by one or two days each Gregorian year. When the Saturday nearest January 31 produces a 371-day fiscal year, the year has 53 retail weeks. NRF notes that this happened most recently in fiscal 2012, fiscal 2017, and fiscal 2023.

For the comparable prior-year date, the calculator keeps the same retail weekday and week position. If NRF restatement is selected and the prior fiscal year had 53 weeks, it shifts forward by one prior-year week, which mirrors the common restatement approach of omitting the first week of the 53-week comparison year. If the requested week does not exist in the prior 52-week year, the calculator says no same-numbered comparable date exists.

What this calculator leaves out

This tool calculates calendar structure only. It does not know your company's ERP calendar, period names, store blackout days, holiday selling rules, or internal restatement policy. The historical sales-release date shown is the first Thursday after the retail period end because NRF describes that as the traditional monthly release convention, while also noting that many companies now report earlier.

Worked example

For September 13, 2026 with the 4-5-4 pattern, fiscal 2026 starts on February 1, 2026 and ends on January 30, 2027. The date is 224 days after the fiscal-year start, so it is retail week 33 and Sunday, day 1 of the retail week.

In a 4-5-4 layout, periods 1 through 7 account for 30 weeks, so week 33 lands in quarter 3, period 8, week 3 of the period. Period 8 runs from August 30, 2026 through October 3, 2026. The comparable prior-year date is September 14, 2025, and the historical sales-release date for the period is October 8, 2026.

Common questions

What is a 4-5-4 retail calendar?

A 4-5-4 retail calendar divides each quarter into one four-week period, one five-week period, and one four-week period. Retail weeks run Sunday through Saturday. The pattern gives each comparable period the same number of Saturdays and Sundays.

When does the NRF fiscal year start and end?

The NRF-style fiscal year ends on the Saturday nearest January 31. The next fiscal year starts the following Sunday. That means the start date is usually in late January or early February.

Where is the extra week placed in a 53-week year?

This calculator appends week 53 to period 12. That matches the common retail-calendar treatment of keeping the first 11 periods on their normal pattern and placing the leap week at the end of the fiscal year.

How does NRF restatement affect the prior-year date?

When the prior fiscal year had 53 weeks, NRF-restated comparison shifts the comparable date forward by one prior-year week. That treats the first week of the 53-week year as omitted for comparison. If the prior year had 52 weeks, restated and same-week comparison give the same date.

Is the NRF calendar mandatory for retailers?

No. The NRF calendar is a voluntary industry guide. A retailer, employer, accounting system, or public-company calendar may use different fiscal boundaries, period labels, or restatement rules.
